Why certification matters now more than ever
As qEEG has moved from the research laboratory into clinical practice, the need for an independent, examination-based standard has never been more pressing.
Quantitative EEG was developed in university research settings: rigorous, supervised, methodologically demanding. For decades, the people who practiced it had learned it the hard way, through years of laboratory work, close supervision, and the kind of accumulated pattern recognition that only comes from working with real data under qualified guidance.
That is no longer the only path into the field. As qEEG has become more accessible, as normative databases have become commercially available, as neurofeedback has grown into a substantial clinical industry, as EEG equipment has become affordable for small private practices, the distance between how the methodology was developed and how it is sometimes applied has grown.
This is not an argument against accessibility. The growth of the field is, on balance, a good thing. More practitioners means more patients served, more data collected, more research conducted. But growth without standards creates real problems: for patients, for the field’s credibility, and ultimately for the practitioners themselves.
What certification actually does
IQCB certification is not a course completion certificate. It is not awarded for attending a seminar, completing a training program, or accumulating continuing education hours. It is awarded to candidates who have passed a three-hour proctored examination, who have demonstrated, under controlled conditions, that they possess the foundational knowledge the field requires.
The examination covers nine competency domains: history, neuroscience, technical acquisition, conventional EEG, quantitative EEG, psychopharmacology, research methods, ethics, and clinical and forensic practice. These are not arbitrary categories. They reflect what a competent practitioner actually needs to know, not just to operate software, but to interpret results responsibly, to recognize the limits of the methodology, and to communicate findings accurately to patients, colleagues, and, when relevant, courts.
The forensic dimension
The inclusion of forensic practice in the examination is not incidental. qEEG evidence is increasingly offered in legal proceedings: personal injury cases, criminal defense, workers’ compensation disputes. The standards that govern expert witness testimony, Daubert in federal courts and Frye in state courts that follow it, require that testimony be based on methodology that is scientifically valid and reliably applied.
IQCB-certified Diplomates have demonstrated knowledge of these standards. That does not make their testimony automatically admissible, or their conclusions automatically correct. What it means is that they have been independently evaluated on a standard that includes the forensic context in which their expertise may be called upon.
Independence is not incidental
IQCB is not affiliated with any equipment manufacturer, software company, training organization, or clinical network. This independence is not a minor operational detail, it is the foundation of what the credential means. A certification administered by an organization with a financial interest in who receives it is a different thing from one administered by an independent board with no stake in the outcome beyond the integrity of the standard.
We did not create the certification to promote a particular technology, training methodology, or clinical approach. We created it because the field needed a credentialing standard that could be trusted precisely because it was independent of those interests. Thirty years later, that is still what we are.
